It is now official by the release of federal government’s 2020-2022 Immigration Levels Plan that Canada will welcome over one million new permanent residents in the next three years.
The experts believe that the target set by Canada is quite realistic as past trends show that the country has welcomed 320,000 newcomers in 2018, and 341,000 immigrants in 2019.
The current year-wise breakdown of admissions in 2020 stands at 341,000 immigrants, 351,000 in 2021, and upto 390,000 in 2022.

Economic class immigration to Canada
Canada plans to welcome over 58% of target newcomers under the economic class through the likes of Express Entry programs, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), Quebec’s programs, and other federal streams such as the Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP).
The rise in economic class immigration is targeted at nearly 10,000 immigrants each year. Also, intakes through PNP is set to rise by 20%. Canada is also planning to welcome more immigrants under various pilots as the Atlantic Immigration Pilot is set to become a permanent program.
Business & Investor class under the federal immigration programs is pegged at a constant intake of 750 each year.
Family class immigration to Canada
Nearly 26% of newcomers in Canada will be welcomed under the family class programs. The government has set the same target for family class immigration of 91,000 newcomers over the coming three years.
